Charlotte commented after Friday night’s game that it played 30 minutes of good basketball. Here, however, is my recap of the game — which, unfortunately for the 49ers, went 40 minutes.
Let’s start with the positive:
- Roberts cooled: Georgia State guard Justin Roberts came into Friday’s contest off a series of plaudits from last week’s play. Roberts had been awarded the Lou Henson National Player of the Week, the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, and College Sports Madness Sun Belt Player of the Week honorsearlier in the week, but the Niners neutralized the junior Indianapolis native (via Findlay Prep in Vegas). Roberts canned just 1-of-7 shots in 24 minutes of play, and amassed more fouls (two) than made shots (one).
And then…
- Thou shalt steal: Georgia State tallied 11 pilfers from the 49ers, with guards Evan Johnson and Jojo Toppin pacing the Panthers with three picked pockets per player. Charlotte opponents have recorded 18 steals in two games.
- Score totals with commas: Georgia State guard Kane Williams needed just three points coming into the game to become the 23rd Panther to score 1,000 career points. Williams tallied seven times that number, finishing the night with 21 points and a standing as the 22nd-leading scorer in Georgia State history after passing Chris Collier (1989-91).
- The iced dozen: I mentioned in the original copy that Charlotte went greater than six minutes without a field goal to close the game. Perhaps equally terrifying is that the 49ers went the final 12 minutes with just two field goals. Charlotte hit five of its final 20 shots — though it did connect on four of its final 10. The worst stat, though: Charlotte only attempted five shots in the final 6:11.
- Plagiarizing myself: Just three players even hit baskets for Charlotte in the second half. Jahmir Young (three), Jhery Matos (two), and Brice Williams (one) tallied buckets. Six Panthers scored at least one basket in the closing twenty. Young, Matos, and Williams scored 20 points in that second half. The Panthers scored 44. That’s a problem.
- In the red: For those of you who are devotees of the plus-minus system, six 49ers finished in the negative. Three of those finished in the negative double digits, inclusing Milos Supica’s minus-21.
And finally, the Hustle Stats:
- Points in the paint: Georgia State 24, Charlotte 22
- Points off turnovers: Georgia State 15, Charlotte 9
- Charlotte committed 13 turnovers to GSU’s 8.
- Second-chance points: Georgia State 14, Charlotte 10
- Georgia State grabbed 13 offensive rebounds to Charlotte’s 8
- Fast-break points: Georgia State 17, Charlotte 10
